Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
