The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The speculation surrounding the recent awards show was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve with a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously flexible, letting players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
